Nachdem mich das letzte THE CROWN Langeisen "Royal Destroyer" (2021) nicht wirklich überzeugen konnte und auch die erste Singleauskopplung "Churchburner", zum neuen Output "Crown Of Thorns" anfangs nicht so recht bei mir zünden wollte, kann mich der neueste Release der Schweden doch tatsächlich von der Startrille an überzeugen. Die elfte Schwungscheibe der Melo Death/Thrash Institution aus Trollhättan, in der Provinz Västra Götaland län, bietet alles was eine aktuelle THE CROWN Stahlzentrifuge mitbringen muss: straighte Härte, gezielte Eingängigkeit und ein breit aufgestelltes, dynamisches Soundspektrum, dass sich gleichermaßen am traditionsbewussten SWE-, wie auch am modernen US-Sound orientiert. Benannt wurde das gute Teil nach dem ehemaligen Band Moniker CROWN OF THORNS aus den Jahren 1990 - 1998. Diesen mussten die schwedischen Old School Death/Thrasher allerdings zugunsten einer gleichnamigen US-Band aufgeben, die sich bereits die Rechte an dem Bandnamen gesichert hatte.
THE CROWN 11.0 wartet nicht zuletzt in den geschickt platzierten Interludien mit starken, melodischen Gitarrensoli auf, was auf die Rückkehr des Leadgitarristen Marcus Sunesson zurückzuführen ist, der maßgeblich an der Ausarbeitung der Gitarrenpassagen auf "Crown Of Thorns" beteiligt war. Auch am Bass gibt es mit Mattias "Arvid" Rasmussen (seit 2022) eine "Neuverpflichtung" zu vermelden. Bereits der atemlose Eröffnungssong "I Hunt with the Devil" bietet eingängige Hooks und ergeht sich in manischer Raserei. Danach geht es mit der bereits angesprochenen, ersten Singleauskopplung "Churchburner" weiter, die im ersten Moment vielleicht unscheinbar erscheinen mag, bei weiteren Durchläufen aber immer zugänglicher, martialischer und machtergriffener daherkommt. Das nachfolgende "Martyrian" ist mir ehrlich gesagt etwas zu gleichförmig geraten. Gerade hierbei hätte ich mir ein paar mutigere und anarchistischere Ausbrüche (gerade bei Lindstrands Vocals) gewünscht, anstatt beinahe durchgehen - wenn auch in exzellenter Ausführung - "business as usual" geboten zu bekommen.
"Gone to Hell" schlägt in dieser Hinsicht zwar in eine ähnliche Kerbe, weiß aber mit seiner eingängigen und kämpferischen Wikinger Schlachtfeld Attitüde zu überzeugen. Das fetzige, mit stakkatohaft anmutenden Drum- und Gitarrenläufen versehene "Howling at the Warfield" versprüht eine sauber korrespondierende Essenz aus Anmut und Power. Die coole Live-Atmosphäre, mit ihrem catchy Refrain zu "The Night Is Now" kommt exzellent, für meine Extrem-Stacheldraht verwöhnten Lauscher, letztlich aber doch etwas zu brav geartet rüber. Auch würde ich den Gesang nicht so elektronisch und steril einpacken, sondern ihm vielmehr grobschlächtigen und authentischen Freiraum lassen, dann würde er den Hörer noch deftiger bei den Eiern packen. Viele Kritikpunkte für eine erstklassige Band, aber das kann sich eine alteingesessene Combo, wie THE CROWN auch durchaus gefallen lassen. Man muss ja auch nicht all meine Kritikpunkte teilen. Das anschließende "God-King" bläst ordentlich durchs Gehölz und macht wieder mächtig neugierig auf die zweite Hälfte von "Crown Of Thorns".
Mit einem durchgehend dynamischen Flow sind die skandinavischen Death/Thrasher in erster Linie catchy 'n' groovy as fucking hell. Das knackig kurze "The Agitator" schneidet dabei ins Fleisch wie ein Schweizer Armeemesser. Trotz seines etwas gediegenerem Zwischenparts geht auch das nachfolgende "Where Nightmares Belong" ab wie Mücke. Lediglich das überlange "The Storm That Comes" hängt etwas in den Seilen, was den im Titel angekündigten Sturm der da kommen soll, eher wie ein "laues Lüftchen" erscheinen lässt.

Die drei anschließenden Bonustracks "Eternally Infernal", "No Fuel for God" und "Mind Collapse" sollte man jedoch keinesfalls missen, wird mit dem ungezwungenen, frischen und freien "Eternally Infernal", sowie dem brutal schnellen Blastgewitter "Mind Collapse" zur finalen, menschheitsvernichtenden Apokalypse geblasen. Angriffslustig wie eh und je jagen THE CROWN zum fulminanten Abschluss das Adrenalin wie Kerosin durch die Blutbahn. Sänger Johan Lindstrand, Gitarrist Marko Tervonen, Lead Gitarrist Marcus Sunesson, Bassist Mattias Rasmussen und Schlagwerker Mikael Norén trümmern sie sich dabei mondän und effizient durch den tödlichen Grenzstreifen zwischen Melodic Death und Thrash.
Trotz differenzierter Aufnahme, die wie bereits bei früheren Produktionen Gitarrist Marko Tervonen in seinem Studio-MT in Trollhättan übernahm, hat man der düsteren Soundkulisse ein gewisses Old School Flair auferlegt. Für Mix und Master wurden erstmalig Jonas Kjellgren und dessen Black Lounge Studios zu Pärlby verpflichtet. Inklusive der drei angesprochenen Bonus Tracks schafft es "Crown Of Thorns" auf eine Gesamtspieldauer von sage und schreibe 54:37 Minuten. Mit einer guten Mischung zwischen überwiegend derben und wiederkehrend lowen Phasen, besticht das neueste Werk aus dem Hause THE CROWN mit einer mannigfaltigen Bandbreite, musikalischer Hingabe, sowie einer wüsten Entfaltung zielstrebiger Aggression. "Crown Of Thorns" beweist, dass das Ende der blau/gelben Fahnenstange für den schwedischen Death Metal Fünfer noch lange nicht erreicht ist.

- Eleventh flywheel from the Swedish Melo Death/Thrashers -
After the last THE CROWN longiron "Royal Destroyer" (2021) couldn't really convince me and the first single "Churchburner", for the new output "Crown Of Thorns", didn't really work with me at first, the latest release from the Swedes actually convinced me from the starting groove. The eleventh flywheel of the Melo Death/Thrash institution from Trollhättan, in the province of Västra Götaland, offers everything a current THE CROWN steel centrifuge needs to have: straight hardness, targeted catchiness and a broad, dynamic sound spectrum that is equally reminiscent of the tradition-conscious SWE- , as well as oriented towards the modern US sound. This good portion was named after the former band moniker CROWN OF THORNS from 1990 - 1998. However, the Swedish old school death/thrashers had to give this up in favor of a US band of the same name who had already secured the rights to the band name.
THE CROWN 11.0 features strong, melodic guitar solos, not least in the cleverly placed interludes, which can be attributed to the return of lead guitarist Marcus Sunesson, who played a key role in developing the guitar passages on "Crown Of Thorns". There is also a “new signing” to announce on bass, Mattias “Arvid” Rasmussen (since 2022). The breathless opening song "I Hunt with the Devil" already offers catchy hooks and indulges in manic frenzy. Then we continue with the aforementioned first single, “Churchburner,” which may seem inconspicuous at first, but with subsequent runs it becomes more and more accessible, more martial and more power-grabbing. To be honest, the following "Martyrian" was a bit too samey for me. Here in particular I would have liked a few bolder and more anarchistic outbursts (especially with Lindstrand's vocals) instead of being offered almost "business as usual" - albeit with excellent execution.
"Gone to Hell" takes a similar approach in this respect, but is convincing with its catchy and combative Viking battlefield attitude. The groovy "Howling at the Warfield", with its staccato-like drum and guitar runs, exudes a cleanly corresponding essence of grace and power. The cool live atmosphere, with its catchy chorus to "The Night Is Now" is excellent, but ultimately comes across as a bit too well-behaved for my extremely barbed-wire spoiled eavesdroppers. I wouldn't wrap the vocals in such an electronic and sterile way, but would rather give it a rough and authentic freedom, then it would grab the listener by the balls in a more hearty way. Lots of criticism for a first-class band, but a long-established combo like THE CROWN can certainly put up with that. You don't have to share all of my criticisms. The subsequent “God-King” really blows through the copse and makes you really curious about the second half of “Crown Of Thorns”.
With a consistently dynamic flow, the Scandinavian death/thrashers are primarily catchy 'n' groovy as fucking hell. The crisply short "The Agitator" cuts into the flesh like a Swiss army knife. Despite its somewhat more dignified intermediate part, the following "Where Nightmares Belong" is also a blast. Only the overlong "The Storm That Comes" hangs a bit on the ropes, which makes the storm announced in the title seem more like a "mild breeze". However, you shouldn't miss the three subsequent bonus tracks "Eternally Infernal", "No Fuel for God" and "Mind Collapse", with the casual, fresh and free "Eternally Infernal" and the brutally fast blast "Mind Collapse" becoming the finale, humanity-destroying apocalypse. As aggressive as ever, THE CROWN sends adrenaline rushing through the bloodstream like kerosene at the brilliant conclusion. Singer Johan Lindstrand, guitarist Marko Tervonen, lead guitarist Marcus Sunesson, bassist Mattias Rasmussen and percussionist Mikael Norén smash their way through the deadly borderline between melodic death and thrash in a sophisticated and efficient manner.
Despite the differentiated recording, which, as with previous productions, guitarist Marko Tervonen took over in his studio MT in Trollhättan, a certain old school flair was inflicted on the dark soundscape. For the first time, Jonas Kjellgren and his Black Lounge Studios in Pärlby were hired for the mix and master. Including the three bonus tracks mentioned, “Crown Of Thorns” has a total playing time of a whopping 54:37 minutes. With a good mix between predominantly rough and recurring low phases, the latest work from THE CROWN impresses with a diverse range, musical dedication and a wild display of determined aggression. "Crown Of Thorns" proves that the end of the blue/yellow flagpole for the Swedish death metal five-piece is far from being reached.
